Well seems this thread was 2016 and guess what,it's now 2018 March and i just installed and having same issues. My system was running at a crawl so i figured right away had to be Avast.So my system was at such a crawl 10o% usage as mentioned by other poster that i had to goto cntr/alt/del to task manager,tried to stop the process.access denied.So now i'm pissed,goto the other section of Win10. Disk is running at 99 or 100% most of the time, sometimes memory usage is a Good evening, I have attached a screenshot jpg of the task manager screen. Windows 10.1, disk 100%, hanging and very slow boot. TrueCrypt in Portable Mode. One thing you could try is TrueCrypt. It's open source (free) and can do exactly what you described if you use it in Portable Mode. Basically, you would need to create a TrueCrypt container on your external drive and put your sensitive data into this container when it is mounted.
Hi, as for now a week avast have been at each start of my computer using an abnormally highly my hard drive for an extended period of time(about 2 to 5 minutes). I don't know if this is a normal behavior that I never noticed or if it is not supposed to do so.

Windows 10 Pro
Avast Free
Any real changes have occured aside the return of an old bug making the display driver to crash(that actually forced me to reboot my PC twice while investigating it, making me realise avast was using the hard drive a bit too much). This might however not be related.
Also note that Avast on a SSD containing the OS while the computer data is on an HDD.
